2007 BILLABONG PIPELINE MASTERS FINAL HIGHLIGHTS
Australia’s BEDE DURBIDGE, 24, (Gold Coast, QLD. Australia) claimed the BILLABONG PIPELINE MASTERS title today in high-performance conditions on Oahu’s North Shore. DURBIDGE, 24, simultaneously captured the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing title for the best overall performance over the course of the Hawaiian winter. The combination win earned DURBIDGE over 000 in cash and prizes, the biggest single one-day haul in the history of professional surfing. DURBIDGE took control of the final early on as the other three challengers fought for possession of one the best waves of the afternoon. At the last moment the wave swung wide of the pack, offering itself exclusively to DURBIDGE, who took full advantage of the opportunity, scoring a 9.5 out of 10 possible points. DURBIDGE followed up with another solid wave and the outcome was never in doubt. Three of the four finalists hailed from Australia’s Gold Coast, including DEAN MORRISON in second and JOEL PARKINSON in fourth. Local Hawaiian surfer PANCHO SULLIVAN was third.
